Book 2: Jan Beatty

“Why is the raw body so unloved

when it’s out-loud? Just veins, blood,

what we’re made of?”

-from Skinning It

A couple of friends mentioned the book Red Sugar to me and I finally got around to reading it.  HOLY SHIT.  This is one of the best books I have ever read.  I knew it was a problem when I started to dog-ear every single page of the book as a reminder that I needed to go back to the poem and spend more time with it.

Jan Beatty’s writing is fearless: she approaches her topics with such bravery that each poem feels like a gift.  The way that she writes about sex and the body throws all the doors open: its done with such ravishing honesty and in a way where you realize all the possibilities that writing can offer you. It took me an entire week to read through this book, because I had to keep putting it down so I could write poems. You all really, really need to read this book.
